My Life: Tom Baines, 12, Shrewsbury

I was injured in a road traffic accident in 2008 when I was five, which has left me paralysed with no sensation or movement from the chest down and limited hand function.

Since I was six, I've been going on courses run by the charity, Back Up. It helps people with spinal cord injury and is the only organisation with a service specifically for people my age.

Back Up courses gave me confidence. Before going on them, I relied a lot on other people. Afterwards, I realised how much I could do and I started doing more things for myself. Each course run by volunteers has different activities and sessions on wheelchair skills.

When I started my first course, I could hardly get up a kerb in my wheelchair. Now I am able to go down two or three steps in succession.
