My Life: Kayleigh Youe, 18, Billericay

Last year, I participated in the National Citizen Service (NCS) and it was amazing.

After graduation, I decided that I wanted to continue with outdoor activities and with helping people and the community.

This brought me to my next adventure - volunteering as a young leader.

This was the perfect opportunity for me to gain experience, improve my confidence and use my free time effectively.

Volunteering was another amazing experience, so I thought about the next step - applying to be a NCS leader for the summer cohort.

I spent a lot of time organising the three weeks' activities and getting to know the young people and their parents.

Observing it from this side - rather than as a young person taking part - really allowed me to get to know the great team at Essex Boys and Girls Club and how well the whole organisation is put together.
