An evaluation of Youth Music's cluster programme, which has been seen exclusively by CYP Now, found children were still playing instruments after participating in the scheme and had higher self-esteem.
The cluster programme, managed by the Association of British Orchestras, saw 2,000 under-fives take part in child- led music activities with children's centre staff and professional musicians.
Fiona Harvey, early years pilot programme manager at the association, said: "All the musicians I know got a lot out of it and practitioners are feeling a lot more confident about getting the instruments out."
Harvey added that the cluster programme's innovative child-led, one-to-one approach tied in with efforts to make children's learning more personalised.
