Music scheme for toddlers a success

Early Years
A two-year programme giving under-fives in children's centres the chance to play musical instruments has helped boost children's confidence and interest in music.

An evaluation of Youth Music's cluster programme, which has been seen exclusively by CYP Now, found children were still playing instruments after participating in the scheme and had higher self-esteem.

The cluster programme, managed by the Association of British Orchestras, saw 2,000 under-fives take part in child- led music activities with children's centre staff and professional musicians.

Fiona Harvey, early years pilot programme manager at the association, said: "All the musicians I know got a lot out of it and practitioners are feeling a lot more confident about getting the instruments out."

Harvey added that the cluster programme's innovative child-led, one-to-one approach tied in with efforts to make children's learning more personalised.
