Muppets to teach global citizenship

Early Years
Tungar the Tiger and Athena the Owl have joined Sesame Street favourites Oscar, Big Bird and Elmo to teach young children about global citizenship.

The new Muppets were launched last week as part of Panwapa, an initiative to foster citizenship and community participation in children aged four to seven.

Panwapa, which means "here on this earth" in the Tshiluba language, spoken in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in central Africa, is a fictional floating island that travels the world so that children and childcare workers can meet the new Muppets, meet children from other countries and learn words in new languages.

The global intitiative has been created by Merrill Lynch Foundation and the Sesame Workshop, the non-profit arm of Sesame Street.

Stan O'Neal, chair and chief executive of the bank Merrill Lynch, said: "No one captures children's hearts and minds like the Muppets at Sesame Street."
