Citizenship could improve teaching

Young children would benefit from a change in the way early years professionals are taught and understand citizenship, researchers have found.

Sheffield Hallam University's early childhood studies unit looked at how promoting knowledge and understanding of citizenship can lead to improvements in teaching the new generation of early years professionals.

The study, due to be published in the summer, got students to work in groups to examine their own attitudes to children's rights.

Project leader Janet Kay said: "We have a clearer understanding of what works best for our students and in turn they understand they could have an influence on empowering children."
