Multiculturalism: Youth projects relieve racial tension in Burnley

Burnley - The Real Story, produced by Burnley Action Partnership, launches today (31 May). It praises Breaking Barriers in Burnley and the town's Basement Project for their work to provide positive activities and tackle racism since the riots (YPN, 2-8 June 2004, p18).

According to the report, 81 per cent of the town's residents now mix with people from different backgrounds, but schools still suffer from racial segregation and racial tensions, with 472 racial incidents reported across all of Lancashire's schools in 2004. Plans for a Burnley-wide school council system, and a school building programme that will encourage young people to spend time in schools other than their own, are cited as potential solutions to the racial divide.
