Although the importance of tackling female genital mutilation (FGM) has risen quickly up the agenda in recent years, the government concedes there is limited awareness of how to commission services to treat and support victims.

Although a number of specialist FGM clinics have been established in England, levels of support available differs from area to area.

The Department of Health (DH) has now issued guidance outlining the kind of issues commissioners need to take into account when setting up services.
