Minister's Question Time: Margaret Hodge, Minister for children, young people and families

The National Adoption Register has achieved relatively few placements at a cost of more than 1.2m over two years, and its performance is beaten by many local schemes. What plans are there to address this when the contract for running it comes up for renewal this year?

The National Adoption Register helps to find families for children with complex and special needs. The service has only been operating for two years and has already helped more than 90 children to find stable and loving families - children who might otherwise be locked into the care system. It would be ridiculous to call a halt to a service that has been operating for such a short time and which has already had such an impact on the lives of individual children. This is why we are now running a competitive tendering exercise so that the register can continue to operate for up to a further three years.
