Figures released in the House of Commons last week showed the number ofclosures of settings offering full daycare has risen by around 200 eachyear over the last three years, to a peak of 1,700 in 2008.
However, the number of openings dropped by around 100 a year during thesame period to 2,100 in 2008.
"The Ofsted data exaggerates the true extent of turnover," Primaroloclaimed, and said this was because many of the closed full daycaresettings may have switched to providing sessions of care rather than afull day.
"If a full daycare provider moved to offering sessional provision, thiswould be recorded as a 'closed' full daycare setting and an 'opened'sessional daycare setting," said Primarolo.
