Messy play

1 min read Early Years
Lordswood Sure Start, Kent

What is this? Every Friday the Lordswood Sure Start Centre holds a session called Giggles and Gloop for children under two years old, with similar sessions on Wednesdays for under-fives. The messy play sessions revolve around children and their parents having fun with a range of materials including flour, paint, dried pasta and even shaving foam.

Why? By messing around with a range of materials they have the opportunity to use all of their senses in the process of exploration. The process of messy play also allows children to mould and manipulate materials without having to focus on making or producing anything in particular. The lack of focus feeds the child's curiosity and allows for experimentation and risk-taking, which helps to develop the brain.
