Mental health: Teachers could play a vital role

Teachers could play a more prominent role in fostering the resilience and mental health of younger pupils according to draft guidance.

Proposals on promoting the mental health of pupils in primary schoolsare due out next month from the National Institute for ClinicalExcellence (Nice), the NHS standards agency.

However, a blueprint for the proposals, which went out for consultationlast week, says schools should introduce a US-inspired programme, wherespecially trained teachers conduct lessons incorporating copingstrategies over 60 lessons.

The Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies programme also includesparenting support.
