Mental health plan a 'lost opportunity'

1 min read Health
The government's mental health contract will do little to improve services for children and young people, the head of the NHS Confederation's Mental Health Network has warned.

Steve Shrubb told CYP Now that the draft mental health contract published by the Department of Health represents - in its present form - a "lost opportunity" to improve England's mental health services.

"The draft the government released is based on the acute care contract and lacks anything specific to mental health services," he said.

"It would have been helpful to include one or two key issues that could have driven up the quality of services but as it stands it leaves everything up to local commissioners. Unless it is changed the contract will do little to improve mental health services as a whole and even less in terms of child and adolescent mental health services."
