Mental health - Impact of Asbos to be investigated

The Home Office has begun a low-key investigation into the unintended consequences of anti-social behaviour orders, following reports of mentally ill children having orders imposed.

The department has contacted two children's charities to ask for helpwith its investigations. The Children's Society and the BritishInstitute for Brain Injured Children have both been asked to providespecific examples of Asbos that have caused them concern.

Last week the Home Office was presented with a report showing how Asbosare being issued to children with mental health and neurologicalconditions (Children Now, 27 July-2 August).

A Home Office spokeswoman confirmed the charities had been contacted, adding that officials were "keen to know how Asbos are working on theground".
