Mental health: Appropriate care by 2010, trusts told

Primary care trusts must make sure they can provide young mental health inpatients with appropriate services by 2010.

Health minister Rosie Winterton revealed the timescale for the proposedlaw, which MPs added to the Mental Health Bill last week.

She added that the Government is considering an indicator for child andadolescent mental health services as part of the 2008 to 2011 spendingreview. A framework advising commissioners on the services they shouldprovide is also to be developed by the NHS's Care Services ImprovementPartnership.

Kathryn Pugh, project officer at YoungMinds, said the timescale wouldgive services a realistic amount of time to improve. She said: "If itwas introduced before people were ready, we'd be on a hiding to nothing. There's a clear message it should happen as soon as possible."
