Mayor's strategy gets mixed reaction

1 min read Youth Justice
The London Mayor's strategy to reduce youth crime has received a lukewarm reception by those working in the sector.

Time for Action was launched on Monday (3 November) by the London Mayor's office in a bid to stem the flow of violence that has led to 27 young people being murdered in the capital this year alone.

The consultation contains proposals for opening a special unit for young people in custody for the first time to separate them from more experienced criminals. The Mayor is currently discussing this idea with the Ministry of Justice. There is also a proposal for a "Mayor's Scholars" scheme, where looked-after young people receive better support in education. In addition, Johnson wants to create a "responsibility programme" to support mentoring projects and to support uniformed and non-uniformed youth activities.
