Boris Johnson launched Time For Action today (Monday). The plan aims to tackle the root causes of teenage violence and criminality and forms a key part of the Mayor's response to teenage murders and youth violence in the capital.
The Mayor's office will offer five key projects, including a unit devoted to first-time offenders, and the Mayor's Scholars programme to give looked-after young people individual educational support.
The office will also work with uniformed organisations, such as the Scouts, to spread their work throughout London. They will be given grants, premises and publicity to help young people.
The Mayor's plan will work alongside measures the Metropolitan Police are taking to tackle the symptoms of crime through assertive policing anti-knife crime operations, such as Blunt 2.
Johnson said: "My action plan will provide the London-wide leadership and co-ordination that has so far been absent in tackling youth crime. For example, it is vital that we address the soaring levels of re-offending and the ridiculous situation where first-time offenders are more likely to leave custody and commit crime than find a job and contribute to society."
