- What is your role?
I manage the Tackling Knives Action Programme for Rathbone in Manchester. This Home Office-funded programme is aimed at 13- to 19-year-olds and tackles the issues surrounding knife crime. We go into educational establishments to raise awareness and deliver one-to-one mentoring or counselling.
I manage a team of five and ensure we hit our targets and that youth workers are up-to-date. I liaise with Greater Manchester Police, schools and pupil referral units to tell them about the programme. I may also deliver some sessions myself.
- How do you make a difference?
We want to build a relationship with police and schools to encourage change. However, we are independent of them, so we can adopt a fresh approach to raise awareness. You can only understand the issues by engaging with young people one-to-one. You have to listen to them to understand where they are.
