- What do you do?

I manage the youth programme at Forward, an organisation that works to raise awareness and campaigns against female genital mutilation (FGM). I run a peer education programme that recruits young people and trains them in gender-based violence issues. The courses are aimed at helping young people take the message into their own communities and creating an action plan to deliver in schools.

- How widespread is FGM?

It is prevalent in communities from west and east Africa and the Horn of Africa. In some communities it can occur in up to 90 per cent of girls. Research through maternity services found 66,000 women in England and Wales were living with FGM. Anecdotal evidence suggests it generally happens during the summer holidays, so we are working with teachers to set up a schools programme.
