Maternity reforms needed for dads

1 min read Health
Maternity services need clearer guidance on how to treat fathers during childbirth, according to the Fatherhood Institute.

In a report released this week, the think tank argued that maternity staff want to involve fathers more but lack guidance on how to do this.

The institute's The Dad Deficit report set out a 12-point plan for a change in maternity services. It said all fathers should be registered by maternity services, so dads could be made aware of anything that may affect their baby's health.

The report also called for the NHS to draw up guidance for maternity services on what information to give to fathers on matters such as smoking, alcohol use, dealing with relationship stress and breastfeeding.

Adrienne Burgess, research manager at the Fatherhood Institute, said: "There's no guidance from the NHS on what to do with the dads."
