Marriage: Figures reveal a dip in divorce rate

Fewer marriages involving children under-16 are breaking down in England and Wales than a decade ago, figures issued last week reveal.

Data from the Office of National Statistics shows that the number ofdivorces by families with children under the age of 16 fell from 175,961in 1993 to 153,527 in 2003.

The proportion also declined. In 1993, under 16s were involved in 575out of every 1,000 divorces but in 2003 the proportion was 546 per1,000.

And the figures revealed that most divorces involving children occurredwhen children were aged between five and 10.
