The Believe in Me awards were organised by the Who Cares? Trust and more than 750 young people in care nominated adults they thought should be recognised for their work with them (Children Now, 19-25 January 2005).
Kim and John Sumsion, who foster for Cambridgeshire County Council, are overall winners. Another 25 people working with looked-after children have also won awards.
Tinsa, 14, who nominated the Sumsions, said: "It has taken six years to become the person I am now. That's all thanks to Kim and John. They have encouraged me and my brother and sister on to many new and different things." Susanna Cheal, chief executive of The Who Cares? Trust, added: "It's very important to allow young people to say their own thank yous."
