Looked-after children: Protocol drawn up to help runaways

A multi-agency protocol to reduce the number of looked-after children going missing from care has been developed in Lancashire.

The protocol sets out agreed reporting and recording systems for localauthorities as well as an escalating system of interventions to reducethe likelihood of a child repeatedly going missing. It also provides for"prompt follow-up interviews with young people who go missing".

Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Constabulary, The Children'sSociety, Blackpool Borough Council and Blackburn with Darwen BoroughCouncil developed the protocol.

Pauline Geraghty, project manager at The Children's Society's Children'sRights Service in Lancashire, said: "Children missing from care facemany dangers and this unique partnership and project helps young peopleaccess support they need."
