LOCAL ELECTIONS: Parties bring youth issues to the fore

Lowering the voting age to 16, poverty eradication, childcare, youth facilities and health are some of the main issues highlighted by Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party.

The SNP proposes redirecting funding to pilot affordable childcare schemes, while Plaid Cymru wants to integrate care and education for toddlers, free prescriptions and setting up a young people's unit combined with education. The Green Party will focus on reducing transport costs and abolishing student fees.

The Labour Party in Wales earlier this month released a mini-manifesto aimed at young people, including half-price bus tickets for 15 to 16-year-olds and free school breakfasts (YPN, 16-22 April, p4).
