Letters: We must all plan for children

1 min read
London Play agrees with Tim Gill's assessment (Children Now, 18-24 April) that the new Manual for Streets planning guidance fails to properly take account of children's play needs.

However, we are much heartened by the assessment by the Commission forArchitecture and the Built Environment (Cabe), which readers can accessat www.cabe.org.uk

The assessment states: "Cabe believes that for the first time, streetdesign is starting to get the attention it deserves. Streets should bespaces for playing and community fun, like street parties."

We welcome the new Department for Transport street design manual and, more importantly, their related new Child Road Safety Strategy.

The key points are in action 16 on page 62: "Local authorities shouldconsider wider use of 20mph zones in areas where children are active, traffic calming measures and changes to residential street layouts tominimise through traffic, and greater provision of safe routes to localplay areas as well as to schools".
