Letters: Two are better than one

I am responding to "Fathers deserve a fair deal in parenthood" by Lisa Harker and "Get the dads involved" by PJ White (pages 17 and 24 respectively, 21-27 July). On reading these two articles, I recalled what a consultant paediatrician said when giving a lecture on the importance of parenthood.

She had observed the distinctly different play patterns of children when with a respective parent, and summed up as follows: "With dad, it was rough and tumbles, and with mum it was tea and toys."

Over the years, she had noted, children were less well adjusted to life if they had been denied both play patterns, for whatever reason.
