Letters: Time to act on nurseries

1 min read
The BBC's recent documentary on daycare centres was quite a revelation and shows a worrying state of affairs.

It is time to raise the nation's game in childcare services and push up the staffing standards required for registration. In 2004, it shouldn't be considered good enough that only half of daycare staff have to hold a relevant qualification and there's no formal requirement for continued development.

Children, parents and staff deserve more ambitious targets if children are to get a flying start when they're ready for school.

Although training and staff development are at the heart of good childcare, on their own they cannot give parents reassurance.

Parents should know what qualifications staff have - this gives some evidence that training has been tested in practice. They should have access to information about the procedures for recruiting staff and volunteers, as well as what qualifications and experience the nursery managers have and how they see their job in the nursery.
