Early years qualifications: Back to school for childcarers

The Government's 10-year strategy should bring formal qualifications to the forefront of daycare for children. Radhika Holmstrom investigates.

Dawn Wills would recommend her Diploma in Preschool Practice to "anyone who wanted to make a career in childcare". Mills, from Tunbridge Wells, was working as a pre-school assistant when she was offered the opportunity to study for more qualifications, and last December she completed the diploma. "It was one full day's study a week, plus work at home, for 18 months, and I found it a fabulous course," she recalls. "It opens the doors to so many other things."

Formal qualifications are clearly only part of the picture, but they are an essential part. The Government's 10-year childcare strategy aims to ensure degree-qualified staff lead every full-time daycare setting.
