Letters: Support for school discipline

Teachers should be able to discipline pupils outside of schools (Children Now, 22-28 February). Schools already exercise discipline over pupils on journeys to and from school, on school transport, and on educational visits. The great majority of children and parents find this quite unsurprising. It would be absurd to draw a line at the school gate beyond which teachers' authority did not run.

We welcome making this and other powers explicit in law, but it willmake little difference in practice. More support for schools, greaterresources and progress on tackling society's problems - now that wouldmake a difference.

Martin Ward, deputy general secretary, Association of School and CollegeLeaders.
