Letters: Sex education, not denial

Social Claire is right to point out that children and young people want and benefit from honest facts and information about sex and relationships (Back Page, 7-13 July).

Evidence consistently shows that comprehensive sex and relationships education leads to young people starting to have sex later and makes them more likely to use contraception. In contrast, studies of abstinence-only programmes such as the Silver Ring Thing show that levels of unplanned pregnancy and STIs can actually be higher among "pledgers" than "non-pledgers", as they have been given no information about the risks associated with sex and how to protect against these.

At fpa we believe that young people are entitled to know the facts about sex and relationships, not only for their youth, but also to equip them to negotiate positive and fulfilling relationships throughout their lives.
