Opinion: Soapbox - Quality sex education is the way forward

Last month the Sex Education Forum, the national authority on sex and relationships education, called for personal, social and health education to be made a statutory requirement for schools. A good time, then, to debunk some of the myths about what this education involves and the values it promotes.

All those involved in sex and relationships education want young peopleto wait until they are ready before having sex. For some, this may notbe until they marry - but it is vital that all young people are helpedto develop the emotional competency that will enable them to makeresponsible choices when they do become sexually active.

Despite nearly two decades of abstinence education in the US, there isno rigorous evidence that the approach improves sexual and reproductivehealth. The US still has higher rates of teenage pregnancy, abortion andsexually transmitted infections than most developed countries. Theprogrammes taught in many US schools undermine confidence incontraception and keep young people in ignorance about relationships andsexual health.
