Letters: Recruitment of foster carers

1 min read
I felt I needed to share a viewpoint having read the article featuring Lord Filkin, "The talking gets tough" (Children Now 9-15 March).

I think the problem of placements of children is two-fold. In some local authorities housing is a major issue.

For these agencies the only answer may be to look elsewhere where housing is larger and more affordable.

The second problem seems to be that many local authorities inadvertently place recruiting their own home-grown foster carers on a back burner due to a reluctance to invest funds in doing this, and also due to an inability to assess those who do come forward.

I've worked for a number of local authorities recruiting foster carers and adopters and for some it is viewed as a frivolous budgeting need to advertise for and recruit carers. Sometimes I am even faced with the comment: "We don't want too many people to come forward, we can't assess them all."
