Letters: Invest in disabled childcare

1 min read Letters
The Childcare and Early Years Survey of Parents 2009 (cypnow.co.uk 28 October) is yet another reminder of the very real problems that parents of disabled children continue to face.

The recent Daycare Trust holiday childcare costs survey found that only 20 per cent of local authorities were confident they had sufficient holiday childcare in place to meet the needs of disabled children.

The survey also demonstrates the importance of the Disabled Children's Access to Childcare (DCATCH) programme. Funding for DCATCH is currently only secured until March 2011. If the childcare offering to disabled children and their families is to improve, the government must commit to long-term investment, ensuring that all disabled children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Anand Shukla, acting chief executive, Daycare Trust

We need good local schools

The fact that tens of thousands of pupils regularly miss out on a place at their first-preference school should finally put paid to the misleading rhetoric about school choice. Letting some schools get bigger at the risk of closing down others, rather than supporting and investing in all our schools, is a deeply divisive approach to our children's education.
