YOI WILL REDUCE CUSTODY USE

Frances Crook of the Howard League for Penal Reform suggests the Youth Justice Board's proposal for a new young offender institution (YOI) at Glen Parva in Leicester runs counter to our strategy for reducing the use of custody for children (CYP Now, 13-26 August).

Reducing the numbers of children and young people in custody remains a priority for the Youth Justice Board. The proposed YOI at Glen Parva will enable us to reduce our capacity elsewhere and help solve an existing problem - that of children who are sentenced to custody being placed far away from their families and home communities.

At the moment, there is no YOI provision for 15- to 17-year-old males in the East Midlands. By opening a new YOI near Leicester and reducing places elsewhere, we will be providing a better geographic spread of custody places, which can only be of benefit to young people and their families.
