Letter: Young offenders shaping services and policymaking

1 min read
Ellie Lewis (Children Now, March 7) is right to say that young offenders should be more involved in shaping services and policymaking.

Since our launch in 2005, Reset, a two-year national resettlementproject led by the charity Rainer, has spoken to young people whoconstantly tell us they feel resettlement is done to them rather thanwith them. As a result young offenders feel disempowered anddisenchanted.

Our experience shows that many young people have the talent andmotivation to produce innovative resources and shape services. Reset hasrecently launched a free resettlement checklist on www.reset.uk.net that17 young offenders helped to create.

We are also a year into the process of developing a resettlementhandbook with young adult prisoners thanks to funding from BigBoost.

If we are to tackle re-offending we must find ways to ensure that youngpeople are at the centre of resettlement planning.
