Letter: The cost of transport subsidies

Transport subsidies that allow children from lower-income families to attend a school of their choice may have much to commend them in narrowing the wealth gap and allowing these children to take advantage of after-school activities (Heads slam school transport scheme, Children Now, 9-15 November). And in some situations, such as rural communities, they may be essential.

But would some of that money be better invested exploring local, moresustainable alternatives such as safe cycle routes and car sharing forlonger distances?

How many subsidies could fund a new path, saving money in the longterm?

This would not only benefit the health and independence of our youngpeople, but our communities as a whole.

Sustrans Safe Routes to Schools supports initiatives that encourageequality among all young people, but we should consider the validalternatives to subsidies, which are empowering opportunities inthemselves.

Alistair Goulding, information officer, Sustrans Safe Routes to Schools.
