Letter: Megan's Law

Your editorial on the introduction of Megan's Law into the UK, while generally balanced and well-reasoned, was undermined by the sneering tone of your opening sentence (Children Now, 28 June-4 July).

Your statement that one knows that "the Government is bereft of visionin a particular area of policy when it starts to talk about 'bringing ina law from America'," says more about your anti-American prejudices thanit does about policy-making in the UK.

Our Government has introduced many policies that were influenced byexperiences in other jurisdictions. Much of the social legislation andthe philosophical underpinnings of the current Labour Government arebased upon the Scandinavian model.

Furthermore, Sure Start was heavily influenced by the American HeadStart programme.

I agree that Megan's Law is ill-advised and likely to becounter-productive.

I would urge you, however, to concentrate your fire on the weakness ofthe law and to reserve your anti-American sentiments for dinner partychatter.
