Letter: Catering for the over-eights

1 min read
I am writing in relation to an article I read in Children Now (News, 7-13 April) commenting on the lack of after-school provision for over-eights.

I work as part of the youth development team working for Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs and a main focus of our work is with nine- to 13-year-olds in schools.

Along with our in-school provision - which includes small group work, lessons, assemblies, peer support projects, breakfast clubs, lunch clubs, residentials and pastoral support - we have been running after-school clubs for this age range. Since the first club was opened back in 1989, the Octopus after-schools project has grown at an amazing rate, and we now offer a network of clubs across Northamptonshire.

The clubs are a result of research that showed a clear need for provision for this age range. These young people, passing through their most formative and impressionable years, needed an alternative - places to go after school that are safe, yet acceptable, and exciting. A place that stimulates the expansion of their capabilities, and an environment that encourages them to appreciate good moral and social standards of behaviour.
