foundation stage: setting the standards" came into force.
What is the statutory framework about?
A new statutory framework for the early years foundation stage (EYFS) came into force on 1 September. The framework sets out mandatory standards for the learning and development of children in their early years, including children with special educational needs and disabilities, and for safeguarding them and their welfare. The framework applies to early years providers including maintained schools, non-maintained schools, independent schools, providers on the Early Years Register and all providers registered with an early years childminder agency.
What are the learning and development requirements?
The three main areas of learning and development are communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development. These areas are strengthened and applied through four additional areas: literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. A "key person" is appointed for each child to ensure that the development and learning is tailored to the needs and abilities of the child and to co-operate with parents and carers to strengthen the child's learning and development at home.
