Legal Update: In a nutshell - Launch of new protocol on handling stalking

The Crown Prosecution Service and police have introduced a new protocol on the appropriate handling of stalking offences.

What is the protocol about?

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have launched a new protocol on the principles governing the investigation and prosecution of stalking offences under sections 2A and 4A of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. According to CPS figures, the number of prosecutions for all stalking and harassment offences has increased by 20 per cent, rising from 8,648 in 2012-2013 to 10,535 in 2013-2014.

What is the purpose of the protocol?

The protocol seeks to "ensure a robust and appropriate criminal justice response to stalking", including by establishing early links between the police and CPS, and achieving a consistent performance in the investigation and prosecution of such cases.
