In 1991 the United Kingdom ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which enshrines a clear set of standards to realise a positive vision for childhood. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the treaty monitoring body for the convention, regularly examines the record on children's rights of each state that has signed up to it. To provide a perspective on the government's record from those working with children, the Children's Rights Alliance for England co-ordinated a civil society report, which was submitted to the UN committee on 1 July.
