Legal Update: Legal aid cuts penalise children

Government proposals to cut civil and criminal legal aid threaten children and young people's access to justice, says Anita Hurrell, legal and policy officer at Coram Children's Legal Centre.

In April 2013, just after a first round of cuts to civil legal aid took effect, the government announced proposals for further cuts to both civil and criminal legal aid. The government received 16,000 responses to its consultation on the proposals, with many highly critical. Critics say the plans threaten the rule of law and access to justice.

The government has now published its response and outlined the proposals it plans to take forward, making some changes and concessions but pressing ahead with many of the cuts. These changes will have a significant impact on children, young people and families who need legal assistance.
