Making Us Count, produced by The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, found that more than a third of a million young people have learning disabilities in the UK, an estimated 40 per cent of whom develop mental health problems.
The report looked at the needs and lives of young people in Bristol, Bradford, Strathclyde and Dundee. It found that young people with mild to moderate learning disabilities often lose support from services, and that child and adolescent mental health services are ill-equipped to cope with learning disabilities.
The researchers recommend that people should be taught to understand their emotions, and that young people should be involved in services that meet their own care needs.
