Health News: Learning disabilities - Young people fail to maketransition

Young people with learning disabilities are more likely to experience physical illness because they fail to make the transition to adult wellbeing programmes.

The Disability Rights Commission's landmark report, Equal TreatmentClosing the Gap, found that people with learning disabilities or mentalhealth problems were more at risk of serious physical healthproblems.

Philippa Russell, chair of the commission, said when young people leftchildren's services behind they had difficulty accessing adult healthand well-being programmes.

"Today's disabled children are getting much better health service than10 or 15 years ago. But there are considerable problems in maintainingtheir general health when they become adults," she said.

The report also questioned whether the NHS is ready for the newDisability Equality Duty that comes into force in December.
