Leaders are often under enormous pressure to do more with ever-dwindling resources, but taking a ‘heart-centred’ approach can help them to better support their staff through these challenging times

Over the past decade, we have seen services for children and young people suffer devastating funding cuts resulting in closure or reduced budgets. The pressure on youth services to deliver increased outcomes with drastically lower budgets has put a lot of strain on both leaders and frontline staff.

Until recently, I was chief executive of Youth Concern and we too suffered severe losses including 30 per cent funding cuts in just one year. It was around this time I came across a new leadership approach called “heart-centred leadership” which helped me support staff and young people as well as expand the charity.
