Imperfect leadership

Too often those at the top of organisations are expected to live up to unrealistic standards of success, but 'imperfect' leaders can empower the people they work with while building more effective teams.

After 17 years of leading three large and complex organisations, I have come to the conclusion that "imperfect" is one of the best ways to describe my own leadership. I am not ashamed of this. On the contrary, I believe imperfect leadership should be celebrated. Too often we're given examples of superhero leaders who have it all worked out, are hugely successful and so good at what they do that nobody else can come close.

But the notion a leader needs to be good at all aspects of leadership is not only unrealistic, it is also bad for the mental and physical health of leaders. If we think we have to be perfect as leaders then we will fail to empower our colleagues because we must show we are the best.
