
Labour's new shadow childcare minister Alison McGovern has been in post for less than a fortnight when we meet at her private office at Westminster.
Conscious there are only six months until the next election, the Wirral South MP is in a hurry to get to grips with the challenges facing the sector and has already taken part in a head-to-head debate with her opposite number in government, Sam Gyimah.
Her appointment, prompted by the promotion of previous shadow childcare minister Lucy Powell to run Labour leader Ed Miliband's general election campaign, came as somewhat of a surprise because she has next to no experience of childcare.
