Labour manifesto: Backbenchers push childcare as key focus for next election

1 min read
Labour MPs have urged Tony Blair to fight the next election on a pledge to make childcare available to even the most disadvantaged communities.

Children Now has seen the ideas a group of backbenchers have proposed as a key plank of Labour's bid for a third term. They claim the ideas for the next manifesto have had a positive reaction from Number 10.

The group calls for free early years education for two-year-olds and affordable childcare for all, along with maternity leave extended to one year and more time off for fathers.

They also want improved help for parents, with tiered support leading to intensive help for the parents of children most at risk. And they are calling for a faster roll-out of children's centres across the country and greater powers of intervention to help older children.
