Labour launches childcare review

1 min read Early Years
The Labour Party has launched a review of childcare provision, focusing on helping mothers move into work and off benefits.

The review will be led by shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg along with a commission of Labour MPs including Liam Byrne, Rachel Reeves, Tessa Jowell and Yvette Cooper.

The commission will hold meetings with parents, teachers and children, and will examine the state of current provision and the effects of cuts to childcare support and tax credit, as well as the rising cost of childcare.

Launching the review and the commission, Twigg said: ?“We need a plan to make sure work pays. That means having a tax and benefit system that doesn’t punish mums who decide to work — not the Tory approach where an average family with children will be hit with a £580 bill because of tax and benefit changes coming into effect this month.
