It's not surprising that Laing and Buisson's 2013 nursery survey shows that the nursery market has grown. This growth mirrors the increase in demand for childcare, which correlates with the increase in the birth rate over the past few years. The report claims the total number of children now attending nurseries is up by 16 per cent and children are attending for more hours. All good news then for many nurseries, but will the good news be short-lived?
Up and down the country, local authorities are deliberating and consulting on council cuts for the forthcoming year. They have to make some difficult decisions on priorities: children's services versus adult services; potholes versus gritting the roads; libraries versus community spaces. The list is endless.
