In his address to the conference on Monday (24 September), Brown said Labour would offer one-to-one support via the voluntary sector. Chris Stanley, head of policy and research at crime reduction charity Nacro, said: "We welcome that because there's no quick fix to youth crime - it's about supporting families and children all the way through."
However, the Department for Children, Schools and Families said the £670m figure quoted by Brown is based on existing funding for youth services as well.
Brown also said he is committed to ending child poverty. But Martin Narey, chair of the End Child Poverty campaign, said Brown needed to back up his words with money. "We need to be told when and from where the government is going to find the £4bn we need to halve child poverty by 2010."
